EDNA BOERSMA
Edna, daughter of Edward and Nellie (Rikkers) Vander Schaaf was born February 15, 1916 on a farm near Sioux Center, Iowa. At the age of twelve she moved with her family to a farm north of Orange City, Iowa. She graduated from Northwestern Academy and Junior College at Orange City; after which she completed her education at Westmar College in Le Mars, IA. She taught school and was very involved in church activities.
Edna married Herman M. Boersma in the First Reformed Church in Orange City on November 28, 1941. The couple moved to a farm northwest of Sheldon, Iowa where they lived and farmed until they retired to Hospers, Iowa in 1978. After the death of Herman (Hoppy in 1997), she moved to the Christian Retirement Home where she lived for eight years. Edna then moved to Newton, Iowa to be near her children in her declining years.
As a past time she enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She knitted bed socks for all her relatives and also, for all her friends while at the Christian Retirement Home. Edna also knitted or crocheted many afghans.
Edna leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters and their husbands, Virginia and Les Baskerville of Newton, Iowa and Kathy and Gary Bruxvoort of Marion, Iowa; also grandchildren, Marty Baskerville and his fiancée, Tania Smith; Allan Bruxvoort; Sheila and her husband, Nathan Schwebach; Shelly Bruxvoort and her friend, Todd Uhl; and Katie and her husband, Luke Folken; two brothers, Reverend Henry Vander Schaaf of Holland, Michigan and John Vander Schaaf and his wife, Gertie of Orange City, Iowa. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Edna was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and three sisters, Mrs. Antonia (Richard) Burggraaff; Mrs. Gertrude (Robert) Remmerde and Mrs. Nelvina (Barney) Aldis; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Myra (Henry) Vander Schaaf. She was also preceded in death by several nieces and nephews.
