Dr. RICHARD F. HICKMAN
Dr. Richard Frank Hickman, the son of Jesse W. and Lonnelle (Vander Wiel) Hickman, was born March 28, 1932 in Sibley, Iowa. He moved to Ohio, where he attended school before moving to Sheldon where he graduated from Sheldon High School in 1950. He attended Sheldon Junior College and later Westmar College in LeMars. He enlisted in the Air Force, serving during the Korean conflict. On November 7, 1954, he was united in marriage to Beth Pinkerton in Quimby, Iowa. After his discharge from the Air Force, he attended Southwest Missouri State and later Illinois College of Optometry graduating in 1960. He returned to Sheldon to join Dr’s. Brady and Kushner, retiring in 1998. The couple enjoyed their retirement in Sheldon and wintering in Texas. He passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska reaching the age of 73 years, 2 months and 10 days.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sheldon. He was active in the Sheldon Community, serving on the City Council, past president of the Sheldon Lions Club, past president of the Sheldon SCDC. He was a member of the Illinois College of Optometry Alumni Association, the Iowa Optometric Association and he did volunteer work for children in a clinic in Mexico. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren; he enjoyed golfing and fishing. He had a cabin on Larkin Island on Lake Atikwa in Canada.
Doc leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Beth of Sheldon, Iowa; a daughter, Kimberly and her husband, Dan Vortherms of Derby, Kansas; two sons, and their wives, Dr. Timothy and Cindy Hickman of Orange City, Iowa and Dr. King and Kecia Hickman of Sheldon, Iowa; nine grandchildren, D.J. and Leslie Vortherms; Sam, Max and Monte Hickman; Oliver, Hannah, Noah and Jesse Hickman; a sister, JoAnn Knauer of New York City and a sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Wes Williams of Smithville, Texas; also other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother-in-law, Fred Knauer.
