DOUGLAS C. FRIEDLAND
Douglas Carl Friedland, the son of Carl E. and Agnes (Folvik) Friedland was born October 27, 1931 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He received his education at the Viborg and Wakonda, South Dakota areas and graduated from Wakonda High School. He was proud to join the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He returned to South Dakota and furthered his education at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, receiving a Bachelors Degree. In 1956, he was united in marriage to Frances Bignall and to this union three children were born. Douglas worked in Newton, Iowa for Maytag and moved to Sioux City and worked for Sioux Tools and later American Equipment. In 1981, he was united in marriage to Doris Tielbur in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple made their home in Sheldon. While in Sheldon, Douglas taught at Northwest Iowa Community College, teaching mechanical engineering until retiring in 1994. The couple made their retirement years in Sheldon and wintered in Texas. He passed away on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center while being stricken at his home reaching the age of 78 years, 5 months and 9 days.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sheldon. He enjoyed reading, camping, traveling, working in his shop on antique engines and cars. The couple enjoyed working at the Spencer Fair at the camp ground for ten years.
Douglas is survived by his wife, Doris of Sheldon; children, Dr. Diana Friedland and her husband, Dr. Sebastian McClendon of New York City, New York and Bradford Friedland of Sheldon; Doris’ children, Carl and his wife, Jan Roberts of Atkinson, Nebraska; Dan Roberts of Fremont, Nebraska and Bill and his wife, Kathy Roberts of Edgerton, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Shawn, Ashley, Travis, Kelly, Liz, Megan and Alec; four great-grandchildren, Monica, Rebecca, Courtney and Emily; one sister, Joyce and her husband, Allen Seymour of Sioux City; also other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Elaine Friedland; his parents and one sister, Janice Craun.
