DOROTHY LOU BANKEN
Dorothy Lou (Johnson) Banken, age 81, passed away peacefully October 18th at her home in the Fieldcrest Living Center in Sheldon, Iowa. Dorothy was born March 29, 1928 in Worth County, Iowa; she graduated from Albert Lea High School and attended Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa. She taught school for two years in Freeborn County, Minnesota prior to her marriage to Leslie Gene Banken in 1950. She also enjoyed working in the Fort Dodge Schools and at Liemandt's in Burnsville. Dorothy and Gene made their home in several Midwest communities including Hawarden, Gowrie and Fort Dodge, Iowa and Blue Earth and Burnsville, Minnesota. After spending many retirement years in Norman, Oklahoma and Bella Vista, Arkansas, they moved to Sheldon, Iowa in March of 2009 to be closer to family. Dorothy was a loving mother and grandmother. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life. She will also be remembered for her incredible baking, her stellar bridge game, and the great faith that sustained her throughout her life.
Her spirit lives on in her devoted husband, Gene; and six children, Rebecca (Jeffrey) Brindle of Potomac, Maryland; Mary Banken (Terry Rizzuti) of Estes Park, Colorado, Daniel Banken of Duluth, Minnesota; Naomi King of Ocean Shores, Washington; Sara (Blake) Beahler of Sheldon, Iowa; and Rachel Banken (Craig Levinsohn) of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Nanny will always be in the hearts of her 9 grandchildren, Emily Carrico, Kari Brindle, Lesley Brindle, Jacob Grasmick, Jack Beahler, Emma Beahler, Grant Beahler, Noah Levinsohn and Lucas Levinsohn. Also
surviving are Dorothy’s brothers, DeVerne (Darlene) Johnson of Lyle, Minnesota and Robert (Marvel) Johnson of Glenville, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Alice Johnson, and a grandson, Jonathan Carrico.
