DORIS ELINOR HILLIS
Doris Elinor Hillis, the daughter of Jacob and Isabel (Coleman) Farnan was born August 22, 1926 in the Bronx, New York. She received her education there. Doris met her future husband Donald Hillis, while working at the Newark, Delaware airbase during World War II. Doris had received a financial bonus for transferring from a New York City airbase to the Delaware airbase. They had their first date when Donald walked Doris home from a USO dance at the airbase. A few months later, Doris and Donald were married on August 22, 1945 on Doris’ 19th birthday. To this union six children were born.
Doris and Donald raised their family in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania and Sarasota, Florida. In their early retirement years, the couple managed a motel in Pennsylvania. They retired to Floral City, Florida and in June of 2004, they moved to the Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon, Iowa. In February of 2007, they transferred to the Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon. Donald preceded her in death on January 3, 2008 in Sheldon. Doris passed away on Friday, September 3, 2010 at Senior Care reaching the age of 84 years and 11 days.
She enjoyed reading and gardening.
Left to mourn Doris’ memory are four children, Rev. Doris and her husband, Rev. Marvin Lindley of Sheldon, Iowa; Daryll Hillis of Inglis, Florida; Dana Hillis-Bell of Inglis, Florida and Dean Hillis of Clinton, Iowa; 20 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren; one sister, Winnie Carcaterra of Yonkers, New York; and two brothers, Robert Farnan of Dunnellon, Florida and William Farnan of Port Ormond, Florida; also other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Deborah Lynn Blankenship; a son, Donald Hillis; her parents and two sisters.
