DORIS E. WALKER

Doris Erma Walker, the daughter of John and Bessie (Traxler) Walker, was born June 8, 1936 in Flint, Michigan. She moved with her family to Gaines, Michigan where she began her education, graduating in 1954, later auditing university courses in upper, Michigan. She married James Gray in 1956 and lived in Germany for two years while he was in the United States Army. Her son, Kevin was born in Wurzburg, Germany in 1958. Following their return to the states, her daughter, Kimberly was born in Michigan in 1959. She married Robert Bennett in 1962 and moved to northern Michigan, where he was the superintendent of schools. Her second son, Barry Bennett was born in 1964 in Gaylord, Michigan. The family made their home in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan where she was a member of the administration at Central Michigan University for 17 years. She and her children moved to West Palm Beach, Florida in 1982 and resided there until moving to Sheldon, Iowa in 1996. She was in upper management for two major resorts in the Palm Beach area, following her position as Director of Public Relations for AMI at an area hospital. She was also columnist for a Florida newspaper in her spare time. She returned to Flint, Michigan in 1998 to fill a temporary management position for a major hotel chain, returning to Sheldon 18 months at its conclusion.
During her high school years, she was enrolled in all aspects of the sports program, later playing basketball and softball on city leagues as well as coaching a little league team. At the conclusion of her high school years, professors selected her to receive “The Most Valuable Player” award. She enjoyed remodeling and decorating her home and was an avid collector of antiques. She was proud that her Michigan home was selected to be viewed on “The Parade of Homes”. For years, she made many pieces of ceramic ware and gave most of them as gifts to family and friends. Her priority was that of her children and never missed a school activity. She served as Vice President for the Parent Teachers’ Association during their elementary years.
She became a member of Gaines United Methodist Church in Michigan at an early age, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School weekly and Bible School during the summer months and was an active member of the church’s Youth Fellowship Group. Her Bible is the one that was presented to her as a young girl for perfect attendance in Sunday School in 1945 when she was nine years old. She was a charter member of the Durand, Michigan Chapter of Job’s Daughters; later joining the Huldah Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in Byron, Michigan. She was also an active member of the Michigan Business and Professional Women’s organization during her affiliation with the University. She served with charitable organizations organizing an Adopt-A-Family program, writing and producing a television public service commercial promoting the program in the Palm Beach, Florida area.
