DONALD “TOBY” G. POSS
Donald “Toby” George Poss, the son of John and Anna (Osterholt) Poss was born May 9, 1924 at Ashton, Iowa. He received his education at St. Joseph Catholic School in Ashton. He joined the U.S. Navy serving in the Pacific during W.W. II. On February 1, 1949, he was united in marriage to Laura McGrath at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon. After their marriage the couple settled on a farm near Ashton, Iowa where they farmed for many years. He was always proud of his dairy herd. They retired from farming in 1987 and moved to Sheldon. They remained in Sheldon until June of 2005 when they moved to the Waterford Assisted Living in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. His wife preceded him in death on June 10, 2010. Don passed away on Monday, June 28, 2010 at the Waterford in Sioux Falls, reaching the age of 86 years, 1 month and 19 days.
He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon and a former member of the Prairie Queen Kiwanis. He enjoyed woodcarving, playing cards, fishing, jig saw puzzles and drives in the country.
Don is survived by his three children, Daniel and his wife, Irene Poss of Sioux Falls; Marilyn Hansen of Laurens, Iowa and Dianne and her husband, Randy Martens of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two sisters, Dorothy McCabe of Iowa City, Iowa and Roseanne Lindberg of Minneapolis, Minnesota; also other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two sons, Richard in infancy and Michael; a grandson, Douglas Sangwin; son-in-law, Mark Hansen; his parents; two brothers, Richard and Raymond; two sisters, Rita and Katherine.
