DONALD T. DAWSON

Donald Thomas Dawson, the son of Harold and Emma (Hansen) Dawson was born July 15, 1937, in Plymouth County, Iowa. He attended schools at Henry #5 and graduated from Remsen Public School. He earned a BA from Westmar College in 1959 and a Masters of Science degree from the University of South Dakota in 1967. He taught sciences at Paullina Community School for 23 years and during this time operated Don’s Clothing Store in Paullina. He was united in marriage to Donna Pettitt in 1965. After going back to school for an accounting degree, he worked at Paullina’s First National Bank, as a State Auditor, as Paullina’s City Clerk/Administrator, and was presently employed part-time as the O’Brien County Sanitation Officer. He had served one term as Mayor of Paullina. He passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2006 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, reaching the age of 68 years, 6 months and 13 days.
He was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen and was currently a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. He was a life member of the NRA and a member of the Royal Rifle Club earning many target shooting awards. He shot trap regularly at Sutherland and several other sites, including the State Trap Shoot. He was a life member of the N.E.A. and was active in Paullina, being on the Library Board and was an avid reader, the Emergency Management 911 Board, Community Development Committee, served on the League of Municipalities, the Northwest Iowa Samaritans Organization and a member of the Iowa Environmental Health Association.
Don enjoyed gun shows, a fine cigar, watching sports, fishing trips and cooking.
He is survived by his wife, Donna of Paullina; a sister, Elaine Fokken of Remsen, Iowa; a brother, Harold and his wife, Helen Dawson of North Wales, Pennsylvania; three nephews, two nieces, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Harmon Fokken.
