DONALD L. RUST
Donald Lee Rust, the son of Harland and Annie (Baerenwald) Rust, was born on April 4, 1936 in rural Nobles County, Minnesota. He received his education in a rural school in District #33 thru the 5th grade and graduated from Ellsworth High School in Ellsworth, Minnesota in 1954. He enlisted in the United States Army on November 7, 1955 and served through November 6, 1958; he was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. On October 3, 1956, he was united in marriage to Aleida G. Groen at the First Presbyterian Church in Killeen, Texas. After his discharge from the service the couple moved to Sibley, Iowa where he was employed for a short time with Horton Chevrolet. He then began working for the Iowa Department of Transportation in Rock Rapids, Iowa in December of 1962 as a mechanic. He then transferred to Sheldon, Iowa in 1966, and was promoted to Highway Maintenance Supervisor in July of 1972. He retired from the DOT after 35 years of service in April of 1998. He then worked part-time for Arnold Motors Supply in Sheldon. Don passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa reaching the age of 70 years, 11 months and 9 days.
He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sheldon. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, tinkering in the garage fixing things, playing cards, helping his sons and attending his grandchildren’s activities.
Left to cherish his memory, is his wife of 50 years, Aleida of Sheldon, Iowa; two sons, Steven and his wife, Beth Rust of Akron, Iowa; Craig and his wife, Julie Rust of Sheldon, Iowa; three grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, a sister, Lorraine Johnson of Prescott, Arizona; and two brothers, Leonard and his wife, Merla Rust of Spencer, Iowa; Lester and his wife, Nancy Rust of Hickman, Nebraska; a uncle, Vernon Rust of Luverne, Minnesota; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Darleen Karl; two brothers-in-law, Arthur Johnson and Robert Karl; a nephew and two twin great-nephews..
