Donald Lee Hattermann, the son of Clarence and Orphie (Tesch) Hattermann was born March 18, 1947 in Le Mars, IA. He received his education at St. John Lutheran School in Germantown and later graduated from Paullina High School in 1965. He joined the 185th Air Guard in Sioux City and was called into active duty as an electronic specialist. He served at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida working on the Apollo Missions. He was discharged in 1970. On April 25, 1970, he was united in marriage to Diana Holmes in Boone, IA. After their marriage the couple settled south of Germantown, where they have farmed for many years. Since 1992, he has driven truck for Schuster Truckline in Le Mars and the past several years he has been an owner-operator of his truck. He passed away on Friday, July 17, 2009 as a result of a truck accident in Marion, Indiana reaching the age of 62 years, 3 months and 29 days.
He was baptized on April 6, 1947 and later confirmed on March 26, 1961. Don was a life-long member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown. He served as the treasurer of the St. John Cemetery Board for many years. Don had his private pilot’s license and was a member of the Paullina Flying Club and enjoyed photography. He served on the Farmers Co-op Elevator Board in Marcus from 1979 to 1989; the First Farmers Co-op Board in Cleghorn from 1989 to 1997 and the First Co-op Association in Cherokee from 1997 until 2000.
Don leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Diana of rural Paullina; a son, Matthew and his wife, Stacey Hattermann of Dakota City, NE and twins, Mark Hattermann and friend, Sara Johnson of Sioux City and Melanie and her husband, Jeff Zogg of Ankeny, IA; four grandchildren, Brandon Johnson, Andrew and Madison Hattermann and Autumn Zogg; his mother, Orphie Hattermann of Paullina; four sisters, Dorothy and her husband, Terry Johnson of Sioux City; Janette and her husband, Charles Mortensen of Kennedy, MN; Pat and her husband, Fred Dexter of North Venice, FL and Marlene Thompson of Springfield, VA; a brother, Jim and his wife, Judy Hattermann of Paullina; also other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence; one brother, John; a sister, Mary Jane and his grandparents.
