CHARLES GERALD “JERRY” CRAUN

Charles Gerald “Jerry” Craun, the son of Charles and Martha (McCauley) Craun was born September 5, 1914 in Harris, Iowa. He moved with his family to Primghar, where he received his education and graduated from Primghar High School in 1933. He was united in marriage to Doris Andersen and the couple have spent almost seventy years together. After their marriage the couple settled in Sheldon, where they were the owners of Craun’s Grocery, which they operated until their retirement in 1976. The couple then moved to their lake home on East Okoboji, where they enjoyed thirty years, surrounded by loving neighbors and friends. The last couple of years, Jerry has been a resident of the Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake. He passed away at the care center on Tuesday, January 1, 2008 and the family thanks the staff at Hilltop Care Center, who became his second family along with the close neighbors on East Lake Okoboji who loved and cared for him.
While in Sheldon, Jerry was a City Councilman, served as Assistant Fire Chief and was a Master Mason. He was an avid bowler, and loved to be on the chain gang for Sheldon High School football games. He was an avid Hawkeye Football fan and enjoyed fishing, going to auctions, hosting cocktail parties and spending winters in Del Mar, California. Jerry and Doris made countless friends over the years and he will be missed by those remaining.
Jerry is survived by his devoted wife, Doris of Spirit Lake, Iowa; their children, Julie and husband, Kern Kenyon of Del Mar, California; John and wife, Caroline Craun of Kansas City, Missouri and Rebecca and husband, Jack Welle of Milford, Iowa; also seven adoring grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, also other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, LoRae Craun; infant grandson, Gregory Kenyon; his parents and a brother, Dale Craun.
Jerry will always be remembered for his delightful laugh and kindness to all and as the man who never met a stranger.
