CATHERINE MILLER
Catherine Miller, the daughter of Cornelius and Johanna (DeRoos) Ver Hoef was born August 16, 1906 in Boyden, Iowa. She received her education in the Hull and Boyden area and graduated from High School in Orange City she also graduated from Northwestern Classical Academy in 1925. She worked as a telephone operator in Orange City, Alton and Hospers and later for Ellerbrock Ladies Dress Shop in Sheldon. On October 2, 1931, she was united in marriage to Lawrence Miller in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple lived in Alton until coming to Paullina in 1940, where her husband operated F.M. Slagle Lumber Company. In May of 1956, the couple opened the newly constructed Miller Motel on Hwy 10 in Paullina, which she operated until 1984. Her husband preceded her in death on April 17, 1978 in Orange City. She continued to make her home in Paullina and entered the Paullina Care Center in January of 2002 and later transferred to the Sutherland Care Center in October of 2008. She passed away at the Sutherland Care Center on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 reaching the age of 103 years, 9 months and 23 days.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina. She attended Friendship Bible studies for many years and enjoyed family gatherings, playing cards especially bridge, reading, genealogy, scrapbooking and basketball.
Catherine is survived by her four daughters, Phyllis and her husband, Kenneth Sholly of Eagle Grove, Iowa; Carolyn Manna of West Des Moines, Iowa; Janice Sage and Kaye and her husband, Rodney Carlson all of Paullina; one daughter-in-law, Diana Miller of Hubertus, Wisconsin; 18 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Mae Ver Hoef of Bishop, California; also other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Loren “Larry” in 1999; four grandchildren, Mark and Robin Carlson and Rick and David Manna; her parents, one sister, Tillie; and three brothers, Orville, Walter and Matthew.
