            Carol Jean McCarty, age 91 of Sheldon, Iowa passed away on Friday, November 17, 2023 at Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon, Iowa. Her Funeral Service will be at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sheldon, Iowa with Fr. Siby Punnoose ~ officiating.

            Burial will be in the St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Sheldon.

            Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at the Andringa Funeral Home in Sheldon, with a rosary prayed by the Catholic Daughters of America at 5:00 P.M. and a Parish Vigil Service at 7:00 P.M..

Carol Jean (Downes) McCarty, was born on Christmas morning, December 25, 1931, to Eleanor Cashman Downes and Thomas Patrick Downes. She was the youngest of 12 children. Carol attended school in Sheldon and graduated from Sheldon High School in 1950. She worked for 10 years for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Sheldon. During that time, she met her future husband, William “Bill” McCarty. They were married on September 20, 1952, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sheldon. To this union four boys were born: Patrick, Timothy, Ted and Ronald. They made their home on a farm southeast of Sheldon. Time passes all too quickly. The boys grow up, graduate from high school, attend college, and made their own lives. Bill continued farming and Carol attended Briar Cliff College for a short time to learn more about her Catholic faith so that she could teach to the high school students of St. Patrick’s Church. It was pure joy for her to spend an hour a week with these students.

     Carol was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sheldon and other church organizations: Ladies Guild, Catholic Daughters of America, Deanery Council of Catholic Women, Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, Province Director of Iowa, and community and political projects. She served on the Sheldon Hospital Board and was the Bazaar Chairman. She served on the Personnel Board for the State of Iowa from 1989-1996. She started the local “Right to Life” organization with the help of Reverend Volgalzane and some ladies from his church. The last big job that Carol took on was to decorate the Church. She made banners to denote color and/or celebration. She spent 12 years doing this and was immensely pleased with the results. She would say, “The Lord has been very good to me. I’ve been very healthy and he has placed me where I can help myself and others. It’s been a great life!”

     Carol is survived by her 4 sons and their spouses, Patrick and Laureen McCarty of Sheldon; Timothy and Robin McCarty of Yorktown, Indiana; Ted and Debra McCarty of Manchester, Iowa and Ronald and Susan McCarty of Sheldon; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 3 sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

     She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents and 11 brothers and sisters.
