CARL L. MATHERN
Carl Leon Mathern passed away on November 1, 2014, in Woodbury, MN, at the age of 98 years.
Carl was born near Primghar, Iowa, on July 28, 1916, to Frank Anthony Mathern and Catherine Cecilia Betz Mathern. When he was a few months old, Carl and his family moved to the Lower Rio Grande Valley, LaFeria, Texas. In 1923, they returned to Iowa, and Carl attended school in Sutherland. In 1927, the family moved to the Mathern farm one mile south of Gaza, Iowa, and Carl continued his education at the Gaza Consolidated School. On July 26, 1945, Carl and Helen Linnea Kimblad were married in Sutherland by Fr. J. W. Cullen. They lived on the Frank and Catherine Mathern farm until 1980, moved to Sutherland and farmed from town for two more years until he was 67. Carl and his brother, Paul, farmed together all these years.
Carl also served as an OBrien County ASC Committeeman for Highland Township for 20 years (1956-76), measuring government ground and sealing beans and corn.
In September, 2004, Carl and Helen moved to the St. Paul, MN, area where their daughters and families live. Helen passed away in 2005.
Carl is survived by two daughters Linda (Stan) Swenson and Donna Anderson (Jim Emmerling); grandchildren Brenda (Ryan) Benson, Jen (Eric) Olson, Karin (Jeff) Heil, Michael (Becky Stuurop) Swenson, Brian Anderson; great grandchildren Johnathan & Anna Benson, Elsa & Emma Olson, Caleb & Elin Heil, Charlie Stuurop, Gus & Oliver Swenson; sister-in-law Ellen Kimblad; also many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents, wife, Helen of 59 yrs., 3 sisters and 4 brothers.
