C. ROBERT “BOB” DICE
Clarence Robert “Bob” Dice, passed away at the Paullina Care Center in Paullina, Iowa on Monday, October 6, 2008, Bob was 88 years old. He was born on November 18, 1919 to Delbert Milton Dice and Katherine (Carter) Dice in Anthon, Iowa. Bob attended school in Anthon through the 8th grade then went to work to help support the family. He moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where he met Gladys Ann Jacobsen and later they were married on November 20, 1939 in the First Presbyterian church. Bob and Gladys moved to Lake Park, Iowa in 1941, when he began working at the Arnold Grain & Livestock Company. He continued working through the 1960’s except for 2 years, when he was in the U.S. Navy as a Submarine Tender in the Pacific Ocean working for freedom during WWII. While working for Arnold Grain, he was electrocuted while pushing a grain elevator that touched a high tension electrical wire and was later revived by his fellow workers. Bob sold Pioneer Seed Corn for 20 years. Sometime in the early 1950’s, Bob and Gladys leased the restaurant/bowling alley (Silver Lanes). In the late 1950’s, Bob and Gladys moved to the Southwest shore of Silver Lake, where they lived and operated Dice’s Boat Livery. Gladys passed away in an auto accident in 1963. On November 22, 1968, Bob was united in marriage to Betty (Griffee) Taarud. They resided in Lake Park, where they owned and operated Dice’s Drive Inn, managed the Silver Lake Country Club and Bob was the Chief of Police for a number of years. Bob and Betty moved to Paullina, Iowa to help his son, Phil run Lange’s Café.
Bob was a Mason, a member of the Lake Park Sportsmen’s Club, Odd Fellows Lodge, American Legion and the Men’s International Bowling Association. He enjoyed fishing and took many trips to Northern Minnesota and Canada. Bob was a diehard Hawkeye fan and enjoyed the trips to Iowa City and Minneapolis to watch the Hawks win or lose. Bob also liked to play golf.
He is survived by his sons, Phillip Robert and his wife, Deanna of Paullina, Iowa; Robert Milton and his wife, Susan of Spicer, Minnesota; a stepson, Noel Taarud and his wife, Teresa; stepdaughters, Sherrie Lueder and her husband, Lyle; Kim Hansen and her husband, John; Dawn Martinez and her husband, Chon; twenty-two grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, a niece, Patty Mitchell of Sioux City, Iowa and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Gladys (Jacobsen) Dice and Betty (Griffee-Taarud) Dice; a daughter, Carmen (Dice) Tuttle; his parents, a brother, Milton Dice and a sister, Maxine (Dice) Johnson.
