Betty Simm was born December 28, 1927, and passed away on January 24, 2022, at the age of 94 years. Her parents were Alvin and Alice Carlson. She had one brother, Don Carlson. Betty grew up on farms in Gaza, Sutherland and Cleghorn, Iowa. She graduated from Paullina High School where she met her soulmate, Wally Simm. They were married before Wally was shipped off to World War II. When he came home, they lived in the tenant house on the Simm family farm. Wally and Betty raised three children: Susan Mary, Sheri Ann and Richard Wallace. Betty was a very caring housewife and mother. Always had good food to eat and was known as a good cook to many. She always had time for a hug or just sit and talk. There was always a smile on her face. We enjoyed her quiet demure, but she would share her opinion when needed. Betty was very involved in her church. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Paullina. She was a member of Chapter FX, P.E.O. She was involved with the Paullina Legion Auxiliary. Betty enjoyed all kinds of crafts. She made quilts for all her grandchildren and enjoyed knitting. Many Afghans were made for family. She enjoyed working with her daughters’ apron project for 4-H. She always found the best new recipes to try. Everyone enjoyed her scotch-a-roo bars and rhubarb pie. Betty always had a smile on her face, and she had a quick wit. She didn’t know a stranger so had many friendships that grew over the years. Wally and Betty enjoyed traveling with their “RV family” around the United States. They visited their son and daughter-in-law in Germany while Dick was stationed there. They enjoyed their two Hawaiian trips and went on a cruise near Alaska. There were also plenty of times when they enjoyed fishing… just the two of them enjoying the quiet of nature and each other.
Those left to cherish her memory are children Susan (Steve) Donnellan of Muncie, IN, Sheri Simm of Tyler, TX, and Dick (Colleen) Simm of Paullina, IA. Grandchildren: Chris, Sara, Jenifer, Karie, Emily. Great-grandchildren: Blaze, Isaiah, Jessica, Sierra, Jayson, Tyler, Slater, Easton, Blake, and Kate. Great-Great grandson: Elijah. Sisters-in-law: Fran Koch and Muriel Simm.
