Beryl David Hicks was born Saturday, January 11, 1936, in a drafty farmhouse north of Linn Grove, Iowa. He was the third and youngest child of George & Lucille Hicks. In 1947 George bought and moved his family to a farm one mile south and one mile east of Primghar, Iowa. Beryl never wandered very far from this farm, nor for very long.
A 1954 graduate of Primghar High School and 1957 graduate of Nebraska Christian College, Beryl married Janice Hinkel on Saturday, August 10, 1957, at the Church of Christ in Mondamin, Iowa. After marriage they lived in Sheldon, Iowa, where Beryl pastored at the Church of Christ. Three sons were born to Beryl and Jan during their years in Sheldon: David Beryl, Timothy Mark, and Jeffrey Scott.
In October of 1962, Beryl & Jan bought a farm across the road south of his parents’ place and farmed together with his dad until George’s retirement. During their years in Primghar, Beryl & Jan pastored the Churches of Christ in Akron and Primghar, Iowa, and the Eastfriesland Church of Christ in Rushmore, Minnesota. Beryl & Jan were also instrumental in establishing the Midwest Christian Children’s Home in Peterson, Iowa.
And he farmed – literally until the day before his death on Sunday, December 1, 2024, six weeks prior to his 89th birthday.
Beryl was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jan, their son Tim, his parents, and his older brother Dick. Beryl is survived by: his sister Shirley & her husband Otho Kinsley; his sons & their wives--Dave & Kay Hicks and Jeff & Angie Hicks; seven grandchildren--Turner & Staci Hicks, Kiley Hicks & Alan Fligg, Keagan & Hannah Hicks, Wyatt & Gillian Hicks, Phillip & Kristin Hicks, Alex & Elizabeth Hicks, Maggie & Jake Luck; thirteen great-grandchildren--Preston, Elsie, Mattie & Hazel Hicks, Benjamin, Matthew & Nathaniel Hicks, Ingrid & Mathilda Hicks, Elliot Hicks, and Winifred, Edith & Hollis Cole.
