BERNADINE S. JOHANNSEN
Bernadine S. Struve was born on a farm northwest of Paullina, Iowa the daughter of Leo and Lena Westphal Struve. She attended Dale #9 Country School. She graduated from Paullina High School in 1938 and attended NBT Business School in Sioux City. She married Elmer Johannsen on November 21, 1942, in Dakota City, Nebraska. After their marriage, they settled on a farm east of Sutherland, Iowa, where they farmed until the mid-70s; a farm held in the Johannsen family for a century. Bernadine held many different offices in the Methodist Womens organization; she was a 4-H Leader and filled her days with exceptional quilting and crewel embroidery. Prior to retirement she milked her share of cows.
Bernardine is survived by two sons, Kent and Mary Johannsen of Jackson, Minnesota and Mike and Loretta Johannsen of Sutherland, Iowa; one daughter, Pam Johannsen and John Shepek of Fort Collins, Colorado; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one sister, Phyllis and Duane Anderson of Peterson, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, on April 21, 1999; a daughter-in-law, Linda Johannsen; grandson, Chad; her parents, one brother, Irvin Struve and one sister, Helen Rohwer.
