Anna Den Hartog, the daughter of Case and Hattie (Van Werth) Van Heuvelen was born November 4, 1922 at Volga, South Dakota. She moved with her family to the Archer, Iowa area, later moved to Melvin, Iowa and settled in Newkirk, Iowa. She graduated from Newkirk High School. On September 15, 1944, she was united in marriage to Richard Den Hartog. After their marriage the couple farmed ten years near Primghar, Iowa. The couple were members of the American Reformed Church and she was the men’s choir director. While living near Primghar they owned and operated a wallpaper and paint store. In 1957, the couple moved to Michigan where for 25 years she was employed at Hope College retiring in 1984.The couple for many years went to Art Fairs where they sold their homemade crafts in the summers in Michigan and the winters in Florida. In 1990, the couple returned to Primghar and spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona. They moved to San Diego, California to be near their daughter living there from 2003 until 2006. They moved to Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon in 2006 and in October of 2009 they moved to the Prairie View Retirement Home in Sanborn. She passed away at Prairie View on Thursday, April 1, 2010 reaching the age of 87 years, 4 months and 28 days.
She was a member of the American Reformed Church in Primghar.
Anna is survived by her husband, Richard of Sanborn, one son, Randall Den Hartog of McEwen, TN and one daughter, Rita Stevens of San Diego, CA; eight grandchildren, Robert, Brent, Michael, Jennifer, Rachel, Katrina, Mallory and Brayden; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Abigail; one brother, Henry and sister-in-law, Alvina Van Heuvelen of Sheldon; a sister-in-law, Alice Van Heuvelen of Sheldon and a brother-in-law, Sid Wagenaar of Sheldon; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Gilbert and his wife, Edith Van Heuvelen, Raymond Van Heuvelen, Benard and his wife, Margaret Van Heuvelen; four sisters, Nettie and her husband, Herman Eggink, Bertha and her husband, Bob Dolieslager, Harriet and her husband, Vernon Schemper and Jennie Wagenaar.
