Visitation will be Thursday, October 15, 2009 after 4:00pm with the family present from 6:30 – 8:00pm, a CDofA rosary will be prayed at 7:00pm and a Scripture Wake Service at 7:30pm at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home of Sheldon.

ALMA G. HONS

Alma Gertrude Hons, the daughter of Ben J. and Margaret E. (Meinen) Hatting was born August 24, 1920 in Ashton, Iowa. She received her education St. Joseph Catholic School in Ashton. On February 6, 1946, she was united in marriage to Raynard John “Dick” Hons in Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Ashton. After their marriage the couple settled in Sheldon, where she and her husband managed the Arlington Hotel. They also managed the Muscatine Hotel in Muscatine, Iowa, the Service Cafe in Mount Vernon, South Dakota. Alma was employed as a telephone operator for AT&T in Sheldon and later in Sioux City, Iowa. Her husband preceded her in death on November 25, 1993. Alma remained in her home in Sheldon until moving into the Sanford Sheldon Senior Care in Sheldon May of 2009. She passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at the Senior Care in Sheldon, reaching the age of 89 years, 1 month and 16 days.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon and the Catholic Daughters of America for 60 years, Alma was also a member Sheldon American Legion Auxiliary. She was a volunteer at the Sanford Sheldon Senior Care, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, and the Garden Club. Alma loved to play Bingo and Bridge, cook and go to the Casino’s.
Alma is survived by a brother, Clarence Hatting of Brigham City, Utah; four sisters, Elda and her husband, Gordon Keeton of Mitchell, South Dakota; Elaine Wellendorf of Ashton; Della and her husband, Robert Wesselink of Decatur, Illinois; Marjorie O’Toole of Sibley; and a sister-in-law, Bobbie Hatting of Mill Creek, Washington; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers, John H., Leonard A., Andrew B. and Eldon F., three brothers-in-law, Ralph Pontow, Duane “Dewey” Wellendorf and Don O’Toole, and four sisters-in-law, Ruth, Donna, Maryellen and Diana.
