Alice Shirley Den Hartog, born December 15, 1929 in Sheldon, IA, was the daughter of John and Tena (Dykstra) Heitmeyer. Her childhood years were spent on farms north of Sheldon. Alice attended country school through the 8th grade and then graduated from Sheldon High School.
On February 15, 1950, she was united in marriage to Willard Den Hartog. They lived and farmed together for their entire married life one mile west of the Ritter Elevator north of Sheldon. She continued to live there until the last few months of her life.
Alice’s life was full of giving, service and dedication to those that she loved. During her high school years, she helped to take care of her younger brothers and sisters after her Mother had a ruptured appendix. Her adult life was forever filled with family, from the daily activities and meals of farm life to family gatherings. As a Mom and Grandma, she wanted to be at each sporting, music, dance or other event that involved her family.
Her church life at First Reformed was extensive and varied. She was active in Bible studies, ladies circle groups, teaching Sunday School, directing and teaching Vacation Bible School, youth sponsor and always volunteering especially when food was needed.
She was a friend to many and cared for them with her love, a greeting card and her prayers.
Some of those who will miss her love and concern are her children, Twyla (Marwin) Vogel – Sheldon, Denise Den Hartog - Denver, CO, and Wayne (Debbie) Den Hartog – Sheldon; grandchildren, Seth (Holly) Vogel – Spirit Lake, Sara Vogel (Tyler Lewis) – Haiku, HI, Mark (Michelle) Den Hartog – Sheldon, Jennifer (Jim) Groote – Sheldon, Amy (Ben) Groen – Spirit Lake, Chad (Kellie) Den Hartog – Rock Rapids, Lacey Den Hartog – Greenwood Village, CO, and Kelsey (Andy) Cooper – Sheldon; a brother, Junior (Joan) Heitmeyer – Albert Lea, MN; a sister, Karen (Dale) Boer – Sheldon; a sister-in-law, Renee Heitmeyer – Garner, IA; brothers-in-law, Elmer Den Hartog and Gene (Marlys) Den Hartog both of Sheldon, 11 great grandchildren and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Among those preceding her in death were her husband, Willard in 1998, her parents, granddaughter, Rebecca Den Hartog, brothers, Sidney, John Junior and Herman, and her sister, Sandra Koele.
