ALEENE B. “DOLLY” PETERSEN
Aleene B. “Dolly” Innes Petersen was born June 24, 1920 to John C. and Belva (Dayton) Innes in Yankton, South Dakota. During her childhood the family moved to Chowchilla, California, Tyndall, South Dakota and then to the Innis family farm near Sutherland, Iowa. Dolly graduated from the Sutherland High School in 1938. In 1941, she married the love of her life Elmer H.S. Petersen. During the war years Elmer was a B 17 pilot and instructor with the Army Air Corp. Dolly was able to live near the air bases in California, New Mexico and finally San Antonio, Texas where he was stationed.
After the war they returned to farm near Primghar, Iowa. In 1947, her only son, Hollis Adrian was born. Dolly was a homemaker and farm wife all of her life. She enjoyed raising and selling Schipperke dogs. She and the family belonged to the saddle club and enjoyed participating in trail rides and horse shows.
In 1965, they moved to the family farm near Sutherland where they farmed until their retirement.
Dolly loved all kinds of flowers and really enjoyed growing and cultivating orchids in her small greenhouse. She also developed an interest in genealogy and did extensive research into her family tree. As a result of her research she was able to join the Storm Lake Chapter of the DAR and was very proud of her membership.
She was a very devoted and loving grandmother to her only grandson, Justus.
Dolly was able to remain at the family farm until May of this year. She loved this farm and was very proud that it became a State of Iowa recognized Century farm in 1983.
Dolly was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer on February 14, 2015, her granddaughter, Brooke Lynn Petersen in 1981, her parents and a sister, Myrne Innes Druyor.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Hollis A. Petersen and his fiancée, Judi Selk Jackson, grandson, Justus Petersen and his mother, Martee Heinse, a niece, Nancy Druyor Stephens as well as other family members and friends.
