AGNES A. HOLLANDER
Agnes Admyra (Redfern) Hollander was born October 14, 1907 in Henderson, Michigan. She was the daughter of Scott James and Cordelia (Sage) Redfern. Agnes graduated from Des Plaines High School in Des Plaines, Illinois and went on to attend the School of Music at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Northwestern University in 1929 with a BA in Music.
Agnes was united in marriage to Charles “Ralph” Hollander on June 18, 1932 in Evanston, Illinois. Their first son, William was born there.
In 1935, Agnes moved with her husband and young son to Sheldon, Iowa, where her husband opened “Hollander’s 5-10-25 Cent” Variety Store on the corner of 9th Street and 3rd Avenue. Fraternal twin sons, Ralph and Richard were born in 1938.
Agnes helped her husband, Ralph operate “Hollander’s 5&10” for almost 40 years, where she became a familiar and friendly face in the open, upstairs office area of the store. The Hollander’s sold their “dime” store in the early 70’s to enjoy retirement and travel abroad. In June of 2002, Agnes and Ralph celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in Sheldon. Ralph preceded her in death on November 22, 2002 in Sheldon, Iowa. Agnes passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2006 at the Northwest Iowa Health Center-Senior Care in Sheldon, reaching the age of 98 years, 7 months and 13 days.
Agnes loved music and shared her love of music through community activities in Sheldon, such as giving piano lessons to many students. She was also instrumental in helping form the Sheldon Apollo Club and was the musical accompanist for the club for 12 years. Agnes was also a lifelong member of the Sheldon United Methodist Church, where she was the church organist for 25 years.
Her many civic activities included a 6 year term on the Sheldon Library Board, board member of the local chapter of the American Red Cross, librarian for the local chapter of the D.A.R.’s and treasurer of Chapter MU of the local P.E.O. In retirement she contributed over 1,500 hours of volunteer work for the Handicap Village. Agnes was beloved by area school children as the “Cookie Lady”, handing out cookies with a large smile and words of encouragement to the local children, who were on their way to and from school
Agnes leaves three sons to cherish her memory of an especially loving and kind hearted mother. They are Dr. Wm. Hollander and his wife, Carol of Sioux City, Iowa; Ralph Hollander and his wife, Ruth of Sun City, Arizona; and Dr. Richard Hollander and special friend, Elaine Chard of Midwest City, Oklahoma. Other survivors with fond memories include seven grandchildren. They are Wm. S. “Billy” Hollander of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; Scott Hollander of Fresno, California; Todd Hollander of New Orleans, Louisiana; Vicki Rupp of Overland Park, Kansas; Danora Moore of Peoria, Arizona; Bambi Hall of Glendale, Arizona and Barry Hollander of Las Vegas, Nevada. She is also survived and remembered fondly by her 13 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, Scott and Cordelia Redfern; her brother, Sage Redfern; her sister, Corda Gust and her husband, Ralph.
Agnes will be dearly missed by her family, members of the D.A.R. and P.E.O, the United Methodist Church and all of her many friends and care givers at Oak Park Care Center for whom she always had a radiant and heart warming smile. Agnes will also be missed by special caregiver and good friend, Dorothy Schwartz of Sheldon, Iowa.
A million times we needed you,
A million times we’ve cried.
If love alone could have saved you,
You never would have died.
In life we loved you dearly,
in death we love you still.
In our hearts you hold a place,
no one else will ever fill.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
but you didn’t go alone.
part of us went with you,
the day God took you home.
God saw you getting tired
and a cure was not to be,
so he closed his arms around you
and whispered, “Come to me.”
With tearful eyes we watched you suffer,
and saw you fade away.
Although we loved you dearly
We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands to rest
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.
